The tunnels were used by Viet Cong guerrillas as hiding spots
during combat, as well as serving as communication and supply routes,
hospitals, food and weapon caches and living quarters for numerous
guerrilla fighters. The tunnel systems were of great importance to the
Viet Cong in their resistance to American forces, and helped achieve
ultimate military success.
Our guide, Mr Hi, is a Vietnam war veteran who was a translator for the American army. At the end of the war he was sent to a re-education camp for 3 years.
Being shown how to get into a tunnel - this is its actual size!
A bamboo trap: a pit was dug out of the ground and sharp bamboo sticks placed at the bottom. When a solider stood on the trap door, he would fall into the pit and onto the bamboo spikes. The spikes would rarely kill alone, so the Viet Cong would coat the spikes in feces to promote infection.
